Position SummaryDue to the amount of travel, this job can be located at any of the following manufacturing locations found here: https://www.jhcareercenter.com/LocationsAs a member of the Central Operations Engineering Group reporting to the Controls Engineering Manager, the Sr. Controls Engineer will spend approximately 50-75% of his or her time performing automation programming and process improvement and optimization, with the remaining 25-50% scoping and managing electrical and controls capital projects.The following duties expected of the role, but limited to, are as follows:

  • New equipment installations in existing plants, including commissioning and transition to plant
  • Process improvement and optimization for safety, quality and reliability
  • Process throughput optimization
  • Reliability and best practices technical writing for standards and sustainable outcomes
  • Project management - automation hardware upgrades
  • Central controls engineering support to a network of U.S. manufacturing plantsIdeal candidate should have at least 5 years of experience and extensive working knowledge in the design, setup, programming, and implementation of Rockwell Automation PLC controllers and common automation hardware, AC induction motors and drives, AC servo motors & drives, power distribution common components, and a strong working knowledge of electrical systems, electrical safety, field instrumentation, process control, and material handling equipment.Position Responsibilities & CompetenciesProfessional

      • Strong working knowledge and experience in the installation, configuration, and deployment of the following automation components and hardware:
        • Rockwell Automation/Allen Bradley PLC systems and frameworks such as CompactLogix, CompactGuardLogix, ControlLogix, GuardLogix, 1734 Point-IO, 1794 Flex-IO, and other distributed IO hardware components
        • Wonderware HMI and Historian server/client systems, and their interaction with plant PLC systems
        • Device level data networks, such as Rockwell Automation Ethernet/IP, ControlNet, DeviceNet, Siemens ProfiNet and Siemens DriveCliq
        • AC drives, specifically Rockwell Automation/Allen Bradley PowerFlex 40/70/700, PowerFlex 525/755, Kinetix 6000/6500/5700 AC servo motors and drives, and Siemens Sinamics S120 AC servo motors and drives
        • Strong working knowledge and experience in the use of automation software and advanced programming tools:
          • Rockwell Automation RSLogix-5000, Studio-5000, RSNetworx, RSLinx, FactoryTalkLinx, CCW
          • Add-on profiles (AOP), Add-on instructions (AOI), function block programming, structured text programming
          • Studio-5000 motion control tools for managing Kinetix servo motion
          • Siemens Starter and/or Scout for configuring and interfacing Siemens Sinamics S120 servos with GuardLogix over Ethernet-IP
          • Strong working knowledge and experience in the following engineering competencies:
            • Automation system design according to industry best practices, and the ability to adapt and to James Hardie design standards and best practices
            • Automation component review and specification for compatibility with PLC control systems
            • National codes and standards governing general electrical design, control system design, electrical safety, machine safety systems, LOTO and energy control, etc. Examples are NFPA-70 (NEC), NFPA-70E, NFPA-79, ANSI B11, ANSI B11.19, OSHA 29 CFR 1910.147, etc.
            • Troubleshooting and optimizing the performance of electrical control systems on continuous production machine systems (mandatory)
              • Working knowledge of computer network system installation and troubleshooting (preferred)
              • Project Management - General working knowledge of project planning, budgeting, execution, scheduling, design and specification, procurement, installation oversight, and startup of electrical and controls equipment and instrumentation (preferred). Able to manage and facilitate electrical and controls equipment deployments, including task-related safety risk assessments, contractor oversight, installation event coordination, automation hardware validation, commissioning and startup, and transition to plant ownershipTravel: 50% average travel; Home most weekends and holidays, except for periodic business critical eventsEducation/Experience Required
                • BS degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or Mechatronics
                • 5 or more years of experience in automation and controls in a heavy industrial manufacturing environment (sheet process systems such as wood panels, paper, steel, gypsum is preferred)
                • 3 or more years of experience in a continuous operating (24/7) manufacturing environment (preferred)
                • Must be proficient in Allen Bradley/Rockwel PLC systems and frameworkIMPORTANT NOTE: This is a very "Hands On" position.
