**Overview**
The Electricity Infrastructure and Buildings Division of PNNL is
accelerating the transition to a sustainable, efficient, resilient,
and secure energy system through innovation and actionable

The PNNL's Buildings Simulation & Design Group provides energy
simulation, tool development, and workflow automation for energy
policy impact analyses and integrative building design processes.
The Building Simulation & Design Group is looking for a **Building
Energy Modeling Engineer** with strong building energy modeling
skills, deep knowledge of building science and technologies, a
collaborative approach to problem-solving, a desire to work as part
of a collaborative team solving national challenges in buildings
research and policy.
**Responsibilities**
The **Building Energy Modeling Engineer** will support PNNL's
Building Energy Codes Program in its role to provide technical
analysis to support the development, adoption, and implementation
of building energy codes and their related research projects. The
building energy modeling engineer will lead and contribute to a
number of high-impact applied research and analysis activities,
such as:
+ Residential and commercial prototype building models development
using EnergyPlus
+ National and regional building energy code upgrades, such as
ASHRAE Standard 90.1 and International Energy Efficiency Code
+ Energy impacts analysis of building energy code compliance
+ Implementation and compliance support of building performance
standards
+ Building energy system design for resilience
+ Grid-interactive efficient building design and controls
Specific responsibilities will include:
+ Develops and maintains residential and commercial prototype
building models using EnergyPlus
+ Conducts state-of-art whole building energy simulation modeling
at a large scale to address building type and climate zone
variation across the country
+ Conducts engineering and economic analysis to advance building
energy codes and appliance standards
+ Analyzes the impacts of building energy code compliance at state
and national levels
+ Develops and maintain scripted workflow to automate large-scale
simulations on PNNL high-performance computers
+ Manages small to moderate projects and/or project tasks
+ Integrates intellectual and technical capabilities of work
teams
+ Enhances technical/professional skills of junior staff through
active mentoring and training
+ Generates ideas for new proposals and participates in business
development activities
+ Excellent verbal and written communication skills
+ Has a proactive and collaborative approach to problem-solving
with the ability to work well on interdisciplinary teams
+ Has a passion for learning and innovation, and a desire to
advance the buildings research domain
**Qualifications**
Minimum Qualifications:
+ BS/BA and 2 years of relevant experience -OR-
+ MS/MA -OR-
+ PhD
Preferred Qualifications:
+ Advanced experience with whole building energy modeling for
buildings with complex energy systems and controls. Experience with
EnergyPlus is highly desirable; other modeling software experience
may be considered (e.g. OpenStudio, eQuest)
+ Graduate degree in Architectural Engineering, Mechanical
Engineering, Building Sciences, or related fields
+ Work experience that demonstrates the ability to fulfill the
listed Specific Responsibilities
+ Solid background knowledge in building physics and building
energy systems
+ Strong programming skills in Python, Ruby, R, or Perl
+ Independent design or research experience in one or more building
energy systems (e.g. building envelope, HVAC, lighting, controls,
and service hot water)
+ Experience in working with Git repository
+ Development and implementation of containerized workflow for
institutional high-performance computing or cloud computing
+ Experience in leading the publications of technical reports and
research papers
+ Excellent verbal and written communication skills
+ Strong research and writing skills to develop research ideas and
support documentation of research deliverables
+ A collaborative approach to problem-solving in areas that do not
have clear or established solutions or outcomes and the ability to
work well with inter-disciplinary and geographically distributed
teams
