The Lead Data Steward provides leadership over the data governance stewardship for Nelnet Business Services (NBS) and reports to the Data Governance Practice Manager. Within this role, the Lead Data Steward collects data, conducts research, and provides analysis of stewardship in support of the Data Governance Program. This position utilizes a functional understanding of data governance (specifically stewardship) to work collaboratively with internal teams and business partners.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:



  • Leads the identification of critical data governance / stewardship issues


  • Assists in the operationalization of data governance strategies


  • Collects data, and researches governance or domain issues based on hypotheses and directions.


  • Analyzes governance/domain information and provides results to help the team derive trends, conclusions, and recommended solutions.


  • Collaborates:




    • With Data Governance Program Lead and the data stewards to derive trends, conclusions and recommended remediation actions based on the analyses.


    • Across the organization to ensure consistent and effective execution of data governance and management principles across the division.




      • Promotes the Data Governance program and data management across the organization. This includes data accuracy and adherence to data governance practices, as well as driving acceptance of data standards and policies across the various business areas.


      • Defines, maintains, and advises relevant stakeholders on data governance-related matters with a focus on the business use of the data.


      • Helps identify data quality and integration problems, provides recommendations for new or proposed data standards, business rules and policy (in conjunction with the Data Governance Program Lead and the Governance Council as appropriate), and assists in developing a road map for curation.


      • Advises on various projects and initiatives to ensure that any data related changes and dependencies are identified, communicated, and managed to ensure adherence with standards.


      • Coordinates across the division the strategic initiatives to maintain consistency of critical enterprise, operational, and analytical data


      • Builds strong relationships and works collaboratively with data asset teams, product managers, application development teams, stakeholder groups, and data stewards to translate data requirements into engineering requirements, drive asset adoption and enhancements.


      • Accountable for:




        • Ensuring that data-centric activities are aligned with the Data Governance program and leverage applicable data standards, governance processes, and overall best practices.


        • Driving organizational acceptance of Data Governance data standards, policies, and definitions and process standards for critical / related enterprise data.




          • Establishes and monitors key data management and governance metrics to ensure the accuracy and completeness of the critical data.


          • Prioritizes work to drive adoption within projects and business units to ensure successful delivery.


            Salary Range: $90,000 - $130,000
            EDUCATION :
            Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
            EXPERIENCE :


            • 5+ years of experience working in data management and governance.


            • Experience with BI tools a plus


            • Experience in Project Management a plus

              • Strong data management background with an understanding of how to ingest and properly use/consume data, ensure data quality, and provide stewardship.


              • A deep curiosity for exploring how data is used across our organization, and a drive to improve the quality of the data to support operational efficiencies and complex decision making.


              • A broad business acumen, a comfort with technical concepts, and strong data management skills.


              • Excellent written, visual, and oral communication skills, including ability to communicate with colleagues and management to explain complex issues clearly and concisely. Able to Persuade/Influence Others at all Organization Levels and the ability to foster lasting partnerships


              • Demonstrated respect, collaboration, and pride in ownership.


              • Excellent organizational, planning, problem-solving, and analytical skills


              • Track record of dealing well with ambiguity, prioritizing needs, and delivering measurable results in a fast-paced, collaborative environment


              • Operational familiarity in the use of data catalogs, metadata management, data quality, master data management, and/or data stewardship tools and platforms


              • Ability to translate business requirements into critical data dependencies and requirements. Ability to think beyond their current state (processes, roles, and tools) and work towards an unconstrained, optimized design


              • An ability to solicit followership from the functional teams to think beyond the 'way the things work today'


              • Able to align various stakeholders to a common set of standards and the ability to sell the benefits of the Data Governance program


              • Foster lasting relationships across varying organizational levels and business segments with the maturity to interface with all levels of management


              • Self-starter who welcomes responsibility, along with the ability to thrive in an evolving organization and an ability to bring structure to unstructured situations


              • Ability to partner with the business and technical subject matter experts to ensure standardization of operational information and execution of enterprise-wide data governance policies and procedures are defined and implemented.


              • Ability to display independent judgment to make decisions where no clear precedents exist; adjusts plans and deliverables with the right approvals and the business goals in mind.


              • Strong analytical skills, SQL, or similar coding skills definite plus
